UAE Golfing Grows – Initiatives for New and Young Players

UAE has positioned itself as a top class, year-round golfing destination with an array of golf resorts catering to professional and amateur golfers alike.

It is evident that golf appeals to many UAE locals as a competitive sport and leisure activity, and for this reason, expert-designed courses and training facilities are widely available in the area, especially when the sun is shining all year round. And as important are the luxurious clubhouses with recreation amenities for golf enthusiasts.

UAE really has some of the finest golfing facilities in the world and the interest in the game has skyrocketed over the years. The Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) was formed in 1995 and is the Governing Body of Golf in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). EGF—a non-profit organization with the goals and responsibility of increasing awareness and participation in golf – works closely with UAE golf clubs (egfgolf.com/clubs/) to promote and develop the game at the grassroots level. EGF is on a mission to set new benchmarks in UAE golf in ensuring that the game continues to flourish and attracts future generations.

It’s time now to find a place to swing your clubs and play at a 9-hole or true 18-hole desert-style (sandy areas with grass) among the abundance of UAE golf courses that have well-groomed putting greens, rolling fairways, vast water features and white bunkers against the dramatic views of the Arabian Gulf. A pitch-and-putt course is also a possibility before going to the Golf Club, a great place to wind down and appreciate fine food after a round of golf.

Today’s golfer can also find a number of UAE golf equipment and supplies stores from the top brands of the sport. Shop in person or at an online store (e.g., egolfmegastore.ae/) to obtain the golf gear and related accessories.

Why is Golf such a Popular Sport? First of all, it’s for the overall experience that can give players and spectators alike: the challenge, the communion with nature, the relaxation and concentration it provides. Tournaments like Abu Dhabi’s Desert Swing and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic have also helped to boost the game in the Emirates. Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) backs both key region championships, Abu Dhabi and Dubai golf tournaments, and is working hard to bring world-class golf in the UAE.

Abdulla Kalban, EGA’s managing director and CEO, said: “Golf has played an important role in putting the UAE on the global map, spurring tourism as well as improving the quality of life of UAE residents.”

Saadiyat Beach Golf Club will be hosting the first ever Amateur World Ranking Event in Abu Dhabi from 16th – 19th December 2018.

So, do you want to play golf? For all young locals who want to start playing golf or, if they already play, improve their game, there’s the National Junior Development Program (NJDP); “[this] is the latest initiative of the Emirates Golf Federation, aimed at continually identifying and developing young UAE national players by providing them with the best possible opportunities to learn the finer points of the game.” For more details, visit egfgolf.com/juniors/.

The Junior Development Program, which is designed specifically for youngsters aged four to 17 years old, is available at The Academy at Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club that offers qualified instructors.

Also, the Tee It Up Discover program aims to give children who may not have experienced the game a try. Such an activity is for youngsters between the ages of 6 and 16 to gain a hands-on golf experience in school for a sustained period of time through educational programs before 2020. This is an occasion to play golf and have fun doing so. This is a key part of what Golf DXB aims to achieve by making schoolchildren familiar with golf through their ‘Tee It Up’ tester sessions.
