Obesity amongst children and adults are a cause of concern in the UAE, as associated with health problems. Unhealthy eating and nutritional deficiencies are some of the factors that are driving the demand for nutrients & diet supplements in the UAE market. The demand for these products continues to rise as a solution for Obesity & Weight Management. Consumers, however, shall note that some diet supplements have harmful effects.
Although many weight loss products are being sold over-the-counter as a meal replacement, it’s best to consult with health care professionals before taking dietary supplements.
Many products with ingredients of Sibutramine and Phenolphthalein, for example, are now being removed from the UAE marketplace. Consumers may suffer serious adverse effects if they take these products. In fact, the drugs are “not generally recognized as safe and effective” after FDA laboratory tests and studies indicated that phenolphthalein presented a potential carcinogenic risk. In addition, some dietary supplements are finding their way into the UAE marketplace with product label information that fail to mention the presence of ingredients that can lead to serious “risk of heart attacks, brain stroke and addiction,” reports a staff reporter at Khaleej Times.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHP) for herbal and traditional medicine researches in Abu Dhabi showed that many of these products are marketed as dietary supplements containing ingredients of Sibutramine and Phenolphthalein are now to be removed from the UAE market, as these are considered potentially hazardous weight loss products. In fact, the “Abu Dhabi Health Authority (Seha) has banned the use of new 149 types of slimming and weight-loss products, with lab results revealing they are fake,” tells Khaleej Times. According to a press release, Seha uncovered 339 fake pharmaceuticals in the country.
The advice is always to substitute weight loss products on the market (e.g., diethylpropion, benzphetamine, phendimetrazine, phentermine, mazindol, and orlistat) with low-intensity physical activity on a regular basis. This helps to burn fat and build muscle, say fitness experts. As always, see your family doctor before beginning an exercise program. Also, a dietician can help you create a low-calorie diet plan tailored on your activity level, physical condition, age and weight.
Most people trying to lose weight only focus on their ultimate goal: dropping pounds. But it’s important not to lose sight of the diet and exercise changes that will get you there. Healthy eating and physical fitness are always the best answer.
